Gran Torino

Gran Torino is an amazing, uplifting movie. If you haven't seen it rent it.
It's about an angry old man who first despises and then protects his Vietnamese neighbours. The characters are all very real and they all grow throughout the movie. I don't know what to say except that it's excellent, and that it has a very positive portrayal of the Church, which is rare for Hollywood.
If you follow the link to the Wikipedia article, you'll see the movie was from 2008. I found that strange because it wasn't on the Oscar pool that I filled out earlier this year. Hmm. . . that's probably another post altogether.

The reason it wasn't considered for an Oscar is due to the bad writing and horrible acting.

Exibit A: The kid wailing when he was locked in the basement.

For the record I'd say I liked it simply on the strength of Clint alone, but the rest of the cast was brutal.

It's hard to tell if the script was just that bad, or that the actors made the script seem that bad.

Clint is still a god amoungst men, even at his age.

The studio didn't stand to gain much if it won an Oscar so they pushed movies that they had a bigger share of.

Nope there was nothing wrong with the acting & that certainly wasn't the reason the movie was overlooked, you pathetic, condescending creep.

If anything hurt this masterpiece with Academy voters it's the blue collar attitudes & refreshingly un-PC attitudes along with an envy towards Eastwood for winning so much & turning up what seems like every year at the Oscars with another great movie or two.

I think they just got tired of him last year but it doesn't matter. Gran Torino racked up big critical acclaim & huge grosses.

One of the remarkable things - & you could do a post just on this alone - is how Eastwood scored the number one movie at the box-office the week it opened & the biggest box office hit of his career .. & he's 78 years old. Clint's the star of the film, audiences didn't flock to it for any other reason & that's stunning in itself. In the history of American (world?) cinema I don't think any actor has ever managed that before.
